Yoichi Kizawa Masterpiece Exhibition: "The Laughing Nude"

Painting

I asked Kizawa to paint nudes — to play the part of one of the great masters of old. The nude has long been prized in art for its aesthetic value, but what I sought from Kizawa was something more purely naked. The figures in Kizawa's paintings have always been slovenly creatures, indifferent to gravity like sandbags, mistreated in every conceivable situation. And yet the nudes in this exhibition possess a freedom and an unaffected grace — what one might call "unguarded beauty." They are not models existing merely to be gazed upon, but naked apes acting with agency. Ah, I thought I had commissioned the naked, but perhaps the true essence of the nude was here all along. I have no idea who the audience for these paintings might be, but the nudes within them are living lives of pure pleasure. I am one of those people — always glancing nervously over my shoulder as I walk, carrying far too many things. Mostly plastic bottles, mind you. I walk among that tribe. Along with my plastic bottles, I'm also fond of carrying canned coffee — the kind with a resealable lid.
