Painting

Katsuhisa Sato "yes - not yet" The exhibition title, “yes - not yet,” or I-I E in Japanese, layers multiple meanings. Starting with the Japanese word iie (“no”), the title also suggests ii e (“good painting”), as well as ii ie (“good home”), referring to spaces of everyday life and habitation. This exhibition will feature his latest works, yes - not yet, paintings made on rolled canvas that are cut out, mounted onto a backing, and developed into house-shaped forms. Also on view will be Same Thing, three-dimensional works made by adding deliberate cuts and holes to stained canvases, which are then connected, and Lie-lie, created by cutting apart a canvas mounted on a panel and then fastening it using screw nails, as if trying to reassemble the incisions. By intervening directly in the very elements that constitute painting—its support and structure—Sato is traversing the boundaries between two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms, and between painting and objecthood, proposing new possibilities for what painting can be. We look forward to your visit. (Translated by Penguin Translation)
